The
Montana class of Battleships was supposed to be the "ultimate"
Battleship for the U.S. Navy. These monster ships were designed to fight
it out with the Super Dreadnaughts on the drawing boards of the
Kriegmarine and IJN at the eve of WWII.The ships were to be armed with 12ea 16 Inch/50 Caliber main guns and 20 5 Inch /54 Cal secondary & Numerous AA guns. Heavy Armor would have protected the ship in a gunfight with any adversary. Montana was not conceived as a "Fast Battleship" that could keep up with Carrier task forces. Due to her size, her maximum speed was calculated to be no more than a maximum of 25 knots. The steel for the lead ship was actually ordered by the Philadelphia Navy Yard who was the yard selected for construction of the lead ship MONTANA. However, the Navy decided that Aircraft Carrier construction was more important than Battleship construction. The project was halted in 1942 and finally cancelled in 21 July 1943. The Yankee Modelworks kit of the Montana represents the ship in her final configuration in 1943. The kit comes with all the parts needed to build the kit. The kit consists of Resin, White Metal, & 3 sheets of photo-etched parts. A complete set of instructions is included with the kit. |
